The Russian government has approved the general scheme for the placement of electric power facilities until 2042

AtomInfo.Ru, PUBLISHED 09.01.2025

The Russian government has approved a general scheme for the placement of electric power facilities until 2042.

An increase in the share of nuclear power plants in the structure of electricity production is planned in the range from 18.9% in 2023 to 24% in 2042.

In total, 38 nuclear power units with a total capacity of 29.3 GW are scheduled to be commissioned by 2042.

The general scheme on the horizon until 2035 has preserved all the objects that were contained in the previously valid version of the document. These are four power units of the Kursk NPP-2, two power units of the Smolensk NPP-2, two power units of the Leningrad NPP-2, one power unit of the Beloyarsk NPP and one power unit of the Kola NPP-2.

However, there is a very important change: in order to fulfill the President's instructions regarding the advanced development of the Far Eastern Federal District, it was decided to accelerate the commissioning of two power units of the Primorsky NPP, which are also to be commissioned before 2035.

The prospect after 2035 is a new geography of sites (the Urals, Siberia, and the Far East), new types of reactors, including fast neutron reactors necessary to close the nuclear fuel cycle, and medium- and low-power power units
