ROSATOM gets permission for groundwater cut-off construction for Paks II NPP project

Press Service of Rusatom International Network, PUBLISHED 29.05.2022

On May 26, 2022, Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority (HAEA) issued the license for groundwater cut-off construction for the Paks II NPP project. Groundwater cut-off will protect the construction site as well as operating Paks NPP from groundwater penetration.

Following the construction of the groundwater cut-off, excavation works on the Paks II site will commence. Currently, HAEA is reviewing construction license application needed for these works to begin.

Preparations are already underway for soil stabilization and the construction of diaphragm walls at the construction site while the construction base is being prepared. Some 120 buildings and structures will be built, including workshops, warehouses, parking lots and roads. For reference:

Paks II NPP is built based on the Russian-Hungarian intergovernmental agreement signed on January 14 2014 by the general contractor ASE EC JSC, a subsidiary of ROSATOM. The project envisages two VVER-1200 PWR units being implemented within the framework of international cooperation.

At present, PWR light water reactors are the backbone of China's nuclear power industry. At the next stage of development, fast reactors should appear in the country, and fusion energy will become the third stage. In parallel with the development of reactor technologies, the development of the necessary fuel cycles is underway.
