FR22 has completed its work

AtomInfo.Ru, PUBLISHED 23.04.2022

The International Conference on Fast Reactors and Related Fuel Cycles: Sustainable Clean Energy for the Future (FR22) concluded its work at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna on Friday.

At the final meeting, the organizers summed up the qualitative and quantitative results of the conference.

The conference was attended by 470 officially designated participants and 210 observers. The total number of contributors was 365.

The FR22 conference was the fourth in a row, and representatives of 35 countries took part in it. This is a record figure for the entire time of FR conferences, which indicates the growing interest in the world in the topic of fast reactors and closed nuclear fuel cycles.

The 200 oral presentations and 100 poster presentations were made at the conference, and 42 papers were presented in the competition for young specialists (a record figure). Three winners were determined among the youth, it's nice to mention that there was a representative of Russia among them.

Most of the reports on FR22 were received from Russia, followed by China, India, France and the USA. It is pleasant to mention Belarus among the newcomer countries, there was one speaker from it.

Among the nine tracks into which the reports were divided, the direction of modeling, simulation and digitalization aroused the greatest interest among the participants. Unfortunately, the direction of education, professional development and knowledge management aroused minimal interest.

According to the results of the work, the conference participants agreed that fast reactors and related fuel cycle technology remains a proven option as a sustainable source of energy for many generations to come, preserving natural resources and reducing the burden of generated wastes to be dispossed off.

The conference also confirmed that sodium fast reactors remain the most mature technology. Among the promising areas, HLMC, fast MSR, gas-cooled fast reactors, as well as nitride and metallic fuels are highlighted.

The next FR (FR25) conference will be held in 2025, the honor of hosting the conference has been offered to China.

The AtomInfo.Ru online edition thanks the organizers of FR22 for the excellent work done on holding such a complex and large-scale international forum.

This critical analysis of the history, state, and prospects of development of modern nuclear technologies shows that nuclear energy market has practically monopolized the design and construction of only one type of reactors (95% of NPPs under construction use pressurized water reactors), which necessitates training of focused specialists involved in the construction and operation of those nuclear power plants.
