Vietnam should return to NPP construction program - experts AtomInfo.Ru, PUBLISHED 10.04.2022 Vietnam must return to nuclear power plans by 2030 if the country is to meet its climate commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. This is the words of the former head of the Vietnam Institute of Energy Nguyen Manh Hien. He voiced this opinion at Thursday's National Clean Energy Forum. "Restarting the NPP program by 2030 is the only way to achieve our carbon neutrality targets by 2050, as promised at the COP26 forum," the expert said. In 2009, Vietnam adopted a plan for the development of nuclear energy and it was supposed to build at least two nuclear power plants, one of them with Russian reactors. However, in 2016 the country postponed the nuclear plan indefinitely. The official version was for economic reasons. Tran Chi Thanh, head of the Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute, said the nuclear power program "should resume soon" but did not specify a date for that. Tran Chi Thanh also recommended that previously selected sites for nuclear power plants should not be abandoned, saying that it was difficult to find suitable sites. The renewed focus on nuclear power came after Prime Minister Pham Minh Chin promised that Vietnam would achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The country has yet to include nuclear energy in development programs. So, in the national plan for the development of the electric power industry for 2021-2030 (and until 2045), there is no mention of nuclear power plants. Proposals for nuclear power will continue to be developed and will later be submitted to the government for consideration, Pham Minh Chinh explained.
