19 CNNC nuclear power units anticipated to achieve full marks on WANO composite index

CNNC, PUBLISHED 30.01.2022

Up to 19 of China National Nuclear Corporation’s (CNNC) nuclear power units would be likely to get full marks on a 100-point evaluation by WANO (World Association of Nuclear Operators) in December 2021, according to the latest performance indicator calculation rules. A total of 22 CNNC nuclear power units met the calculation conditions of the WANO composite index, with their average index reaching a record high of 99.51 and performance reaching advanced levels.

The 19 units are:

Units 1, 2, 3 and 4 at the Qinshan No 2 nuclear power plant;

Units 1 and 2 at the Qinshan No 3 nuclear power plant;

Unit 1 at the Fangjiashan nuclear power plant;

Units 1, 2, 3 and 4 at the Tianwan nuclear power plant;

Units 1, 2, 3 and 4 at the Fuqing nuclear power plant;

Units 1 and 2 at the Changjiang nuclear power plant; and

Units 1 and 2 at the Sanmen Nuclear Power Plant.

Note: WANO indicators are a common indicator system for the global nuclear power industry, composed of 14 individual indicators and a composite index. They evaluate nuclear power plants' comprehensive performance in terms of nuclear safety, power generation management, power plant equipment reliability, and industrial safety in a quantitative manner.

OPINION

Victor Murogov
This critical analysis of the history, state, and prospects of development of modern nuclear technologies shows that nuclear energy market has practically monopolized the design and construction of only one type of reactors (95% of NPPs under construction use pressurized water reactors), which necessitates training of focused specialists involved in the construction and operation of those nuclear power plants.
