AAEM LLC delivers its first rotor for Arabelle steam turbine to Akkuyu NPP site

AAEM LLC, PUBLISHED 05.04.2021

AAEM LLC, a joint venture of Atomenergomash JSC and GE Steam Power, has delivered the first high and intermediate pressure rotor for the Arabelle steam turbine to the construction site of Akkuyu NPPin Turkey. The equipment will be installed at Unit 1.

The rotor was manufactured by GE Steam Power at its Belfort factory in France with the support of AAEM LLC four months ahead of schedule.

The rotor took 16 months to manufacture. It is 12 meters long and weighs 107 tonnes. Being part of the unique Arabelle steam turbine technology developed by GE Steam Power, the welded rotor design contributes to the enhanced high reliability of the steam turbine.

In total, four half-speed Arabelle steam turbines will be installed at Akkuyu NPP, one at each unit. Each turbine comprises three modules: one high and intermediate pressure module and two low pressure modules. The turbine-generator overall length will be around 60 meters.

The joint venture AAEM was established in 2007 to supply equipment for nuclear turbine halls featuring Russian design, using Arabelle steam turbine technology developed by GE Steam Power.

Since 2017, AAEM has been performing the contract for the supply of steam turbine package equipment for the turbine halls of Akkuyu NPP. The project features four units with Russian VVER-1200 Gen III+ reactor plants that is compliant with the most stringent safety standards. Each NPP unit has an installed capacity of 1255MW.

AAEM LLC's specialists are responsible for the engineering, design, and supply of the equipment.

The main turbine-generator plant equipment, including the half-speed Arabelle turbine, GIGATOP four-pole generator and condenser vacuum system equipment will be manufactured by GE Steam Power.

The pumps, heat-exchange and other auxiliary equipment will be mainly manufactured by Atomenergomash JSC factories: ZiO-Podolsk JSC, CKMB JSC, ARAKO spol s r.o., ATM JSC, CNIITMASH JSC.

The turbine generator systems designed by AAEM and its subcontractors will ensure that the units as a whole operate with maximum efficiency, reliability and safety.

Victor Murogov
This critical analysis of the history, state, and prospects of development of modern nuclear technologies shows that nuclear energy market has practically monopolized the design and construction of only one type of reactors (95% of NPPs under construction use pressurized water reactors), which necessitates training of focused specialists involved in the construction and operation of those nuclear power plants.
