Nations to Minimize Weapons-Grade Uranium Use - Communique RIA Novosti, PUBLISHED April 02, 2012 World leaders at the final session of the two-day Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul adopted a communique on Tuesday that calls on nations to minimize the use of weapons-usable uranium by the end of 2013. It also urges tougher measures to keep loose fissile materials out of the wrong hands. "We recognize that the Nuclear Security Summit is a valuable process at the highest political level, supporting our joint call to secure all vulnerable nuclear material," the communique said. The 13-point document laid down a number of general obligations to bolster protection of loose nuclear materials. "We also encourage states to consider the safe, secure and timely removal and disposition of nuclear materials from facilities no longer using them, as appropriate, and consistent with national security considerations and development objectives," it said. It also welcomed the IAEA’s intent to continue to “lead efforts to assist states" to prevent nuclear terrorism and ensure the safety of atomic energy.
