The consequences of the closure of three nuclear power plants in Illinois will be ambiguous - report

AtomInfo.Ru, PUBLISHED 11.01.2015

A report is released in Illinois (USA) prepared by the different departments of the state and devoted to the question of whether support nuclear power stations of the Exelon.

Previously, the Exelon announced that three of its nuclear power plants in the state may be closed for economic reasons.

The company is asking state preferences for stations in view of the importance of its contribution to the struggle for the reduction of greenhouse gases. The preferences, in particular, can be expressed in the form of the introduction of additional taxes on the volume of such emissions, which will hit the competitors of nuclear energy.

In the report prepared by state interagency one points that the preservation of the NPP will save hundreds of millions of dollars or more, which will have to spend if the state agrees with the closure of nuclear power stations and will reimburse its generation by imports from outside of Illinois.

However, the closure of the nuclear power plant will not cause local power outages, the authors of the report said. They remind that a significant percentage of the generation of nuclear power stations is now sold outside the state.

The report compares the consequences to consumers of options with the introduction of "punitive" tax on greenhouse emissions (and salvation NPP) and without it (with the closure of nuclear power plants).

In the first case, the electricity in the state will grow by 17-21% for a period of 28 years. In the second case, the price of electricity will increase by only 10-16%.

The authors of the report also considered the implications for jobs. The closing of three nuclear power plant will lead to the loss of 2,500 jobs. But if the state will invest in the development of renewable energy sources, by 2019 it will appear 9600 new jobs.

From an environmental point of view, the closure of nuclear power plants will result in long-term costs caused by the climate destabilization, say the authors.

The Exelon does not comment on the report.
