US Delegation to Meet With Iranian Officials in Geneva to Discuss Tehran Nuclear Issue

US Delegation, comprising of Deputy Secretary of State William Burns, Under Secretary for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman and Senior Advisor Jake Sullivan is to meet with Iranian officials in Geneva on September 4-5 in order to discuss Iranian nuclear issue, US State Department Spokesperson Marie Harf wrote Thursday on her Twitter.

”These bilateral consultations will take place in the context of the P5+1 nuclear negotiations led by EU High Representative Cathy [Catherine] Ashton,” Harf wrote.

Earlier this week, Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani said that his country was ready to continue negotiations with the P5+1 group of international mediators to reach a final agreement on the nuclear issue.

Rouhani mentioned that Iran would not accept any discriminatory approach to this issue, which is contrary to the international law, and wants the absolute rights of the country to be met like those of the other members of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

On November 24, 2013, an action plan was adopted in Geneva, according to which Iran and the so-called P5+1 international mediation group, comprising Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and China, had to settle on an agreement that would guarantee the peaceful nature of Tehran’s nuclear program, in exchange for lifting of international sanctions against Iran.

The document has to be signed a year from the Geneva Accord, which gives the parties until November 24, 2014, to reach a final agreement.
