Moscow Calls US Report on International Arms Control Total Disinformation

RIA Novosti, PUBLISHED 05.08.2014

The recent statements by the US Department of State on other countries’ noncompliance with arms control, nonproliferation, and disarmament agreements are blatant and open disinformation, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

“Blatant, deliberate disinformation of the international public opinion on other countries’ compliance with arms control agreements raises doubts over the authenticity of the data on the United States’ adherence to its own international obligations. We are ready to help Washington to rectify this omission. Objectivity and accuracy should be made the key pillars,” the statement by the ministry said.

According to Russian diplomats, the Unites States continues to systematically shatter the system of global strategic stability.

“Back in 2001, the Americans started the ball rolling by unilaterally withdrawing from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty. Now accelerated and unrestricted build-up of the US anti-ballistic missile capacity and its reluctance to clear the territories of other states from the US sub-strategic nuclear arsenal deployed there, development of Prompt Global Strike initiative, build-up of military forces only exacerbate the situation. The United States’ firm refusal to participate in the elaboration of international agreements on prevention of an arms race in outer space is also quite illustrative. Thus Washington is in fact creating a new super-technological threat to the entire world, which is capable to shatter the system of strategic stability on our planet,” the Foreign Ministry stressed.

Apart from all this, the Foreign Ministry urges to pay attention to numerous discrepancies and controversies in the US arms control policy.

“Washington initiated a conclusion of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty; however, this was the United States that has not yet ratified this landmark agreement,” the ministry elaborated.

Moscow also remains perplexed why the United States has not yet ratified the 2005 Amendment to the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material.
