Russia, US Stand Closer on Key World Issues - Ambassador

RIA Novosti, PUBLISHED 23.10.2013

Positions of Russia and the United States on key international issues became much closer recently despite remaining contradictions, Russian Ambassador to the United States Sergei Kislyak said.

“The level of cooperation on the chemical weapons in Syria is unprecedented,” Kislyak said. “But we are also working on the next stage, which is a political settlement [in Syria].”

Moscow and Washington co-led the recent drive to dispose of Syrian chemical weapons after they were used in the ongoing civil war in the Middle Eastern country, which has to date claimed over 100,000 lives.

“It is very inspirational to see how constructively we can negotiate issues, on which we were far apart six or 12 months ago,” Kislyak said.

The Russian ambassador added that Moscow and Washington also closely cooperate on the resolution of controversial Iranian and North Korean nuclear programs.

We believe that signing and ratifying the CTBT should become an imperative for international relations as it will help strengthen the nuclear nonproliferation regime. It is within our reach to make our world safer.
