Baltic NPP: a meeting of heads of construction and organizations held Public Relations and Information Policy Department of NIAEP, PUBLISHED July 14, 2012 On the 12th of July, 2012 a working meeting of heads of construction and installation organizations from Kaliningrad Region and Republics of Belarus, Lithuania and the Czech Republic was held on the site of Baltic NPP. The meeting was attended by representatives of more than 50 organizations from Kaliningrad Region, 5 Lithuanian, 5 Belarus and 1 Czech construction companies. The goal of the meeting organized by NIAEP for potential subcontractors was to present on the facilities where civil works are planned. Before the event its attendees visited the construction facilities on Baltic NPP site. Vyacheslav Makhonin, First Deputy Director of NIAEP and Director of the Baltic Branch, familiarized the attendees with key parameters of the large-scale construction project. In particular, he noted that the need in major construction materials was as follows: pre-fabricated reinforced concrete and concrete – 1,400,000 cubic meters, structural steel - nearly 35,000 tons, cement - about 440,000 tons, and rolled metal – 220,000 tons. It is planned that the active construction period, until the first power, will take 54 months for the first power unit and 48 months for the second power unit of Baltic NPP. “Today, 22 contractor and subcontractor companies work on the site; 800 workers of core jobs are engaged. Before the end of this year it is planned to build up the staff number up to 2,500 people. In peaking periods there will be more than 4,000 people working on the construction site,” Makhonin said. The meeting participants familiarized with the construction support facilities, rebar making shop, and observed the containment lining operations. Anatoly Andriyanov, Deputy Director for Operations of the Baltic Branch of NIAEP, who guided the tour, noted that at the nuclear power facilities there was a strict post-operation control and special requirements were applied to equipment and materials in use. Both foreign and Russian participants of the meeting noted good housekeeping on the Baltic NPP construction site, well-thought infrastructure, and production culture. Summing up the meeting, Makhonin said: “The colleague-builders have familiarized with features of construction of nuclear power facilities, general regulatory requirements, terms and conditions of contracts, mechanization approach, and the ideology of construction using pre-assembled parts. This is the first stage of building up a division of potential contractors for working at facilities being constructed under NIAEP’s control. This interaction will continue in Moscow on July 19. We hope that soon the participants of today’s meeting, who are fit to meet requirements posed by the nuclear industry, will become our partners on NIAEP’s construction sites.” To remind, Baltic NPP is the first project in the history of the national nuclear power, which is open for private investors, including foreign ones.
