Obama invites Russia to participate in missile defense plans in Europe

RIA Novosti, PUBLISHED May 29, 2011

The United States President Barack Obama during his visit to Poland has invited Moscow to participate in missile defense plans in Europe, world media reported.

"I am very proud of the reset process ... We believe missile defense is something where we can cooperate with Russia because we share external threats," Obama said at a joint press-conference with Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski.. "This will not be a threat to the strategic balance," he continued.

Russia has been concerned by U.S. reluctance to provide legally binding guarantees that its European missile defense system will not be directed against Russia.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev warned last Wednesday that Russia would have to build up its nuclear capability if NATO and the United States failed to reach an agreement with Moscow on European missile defense cooperation.

Moscow has warned it might pull out of the new START Treaty.
