JSC TVEL supplied the first batch of natural uranium pellets for Indian Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors

On April 8th JSC TVEL supplied the first batch of natural uranium pellets for India's Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWR). 30 metric tons of pellets were delivered to Nuclear Fuel Complex in Hyderabad (India) for further fuel manufacturing for Rajasthan power plant.

According to the contract signed on February 11th this year JSC TVEL is to supply low enriched uranium pellets for units 1 and 2 of Tarapur NPP, with BWR type reactors.

The first batch of pellets delivery for Tarapur NPP is scheduled in summer of 2009. TVEL already supplied fuel pellets for this power plant on two occasions earlier.

Fuel pellets made by TVEL for Indian NPPs are unique according to the whole range of parameters. During the manufacturing process innovation technologies and methods were used which had already been highly evaluated by Indian partners.

Contract signing made possible after NSG countries (including the Russian Federation) facilitated international civil nuclear trade with India.

JSC TVEL became the first company to sign the contract for nuclear pellets supply for the reactor of non-Russian design. It was won in an honest competition with foreign firms.

JSC TVEL also produces and supplies nuclear fuel for Kudankulam NPP which operates on two units with VVER-1000 reactors of Russian design.

Provision with resources, fundamental research basis, leading innovation technologies and industrial capacities allow JSC TVEL exercise complete nuclear fuel deliveries with perfect operational characteristics and for reasonable prices.

Long-tem relationship and complex approach to partnership remain TVEL's main principles of cooperation with its customers. TVEL's clients get the best product which satisfies their requirements and meets the highest technological standards.

The integration of the Russian science achievements and practical capacities of the innovation production is the basis of TVEL's success.

India has extensive plans for nuclear energy development. It is scheduled to increase the combined capacity of all Indian NPPs to 40 GW by 2025.

On February 11th 2009 in Mumbai (India) JSC TVEL and the Department of Atomic Energy, the Government of India, signed long-term contracts for fuel pellet's supply to India's nuclear power reactors. The total cost of contracts is more than $700 million.

The Russian company was the first to sign a long-term contract to supply nuclear fuel to India after the Nuclear Suppliers' Group (NSG) on September 6, 2008 lifted restrictions for supply of uranium, reactors and technologies to India.

TVEL Corporation is one of the world's leaders in nuclear fuel manufacturers. 100% of TVEL's shares belong to JSC Atomenergoprom - a Russian state-owned holding which unites nuclear industry enterprises. This is a full cycle nuclear power company having operations extending from uranium mining through to construction of nuclear power plants and electricity generation.
