TEPCO to start fuel removal from Unit 2 spent fuel pool at Fukushima Daiichi in June

TEPCO plans to begin removing fuel from the spent fuel pool of the damaged Unit 2 at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station in June 2026.

A total of 615 fuel assemblies are stored in the pool, including 587 spent fuel assemblies and 28 fresh fuel assemblies. The removal work is expected to be completed in 2028.

Fuel handling equipment has already been installed. In March 2026, the company announced that the necessary inspections and tests had been completed.

As previously reported, fuel has already been removed from the spent fuel pools of Units 3 and 4 at the damaged station. Work to remove fuel from the Unit 1 spent fuel pool is not expected to begin until next year at the earliest.
