Global workshop on SMRs and MRs deployment held in Hainan

CNNC, PUBLISHED 03.01.2025

The Interregional Workshop on Key Considerations Regarding Infrastructure Development to Support SMRs and MRs Deployment was jointly held by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the China Atomic Energy Authority (CAEA) and undertaken by Hainan Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. a subsidiary of the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), in Haikou, capital city of South China's Hainan province, on December 16.

The workshop event was one of series activities held in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of China's accession to the IAEA. It drew the attendance of about 150 officials and nuclear experts from over 40 countries, who held discussions and shared personal experience over key issues concerning infrastructural development of the SMRs and MRs.

Deputy IAEA Director-General Liu Hua attended and addressed the conference via video link. Secretary-General of the CAEA Huang Ping gave his speech in person at the meeting.

Representatives of the CNNC spoke with IAEA officials, and those of different nations in charge of energy policy making, nuclear safety supervision and technological development about the corporation's comprehensive utilization, integrated solutions, the building and transfers of the SMRs facilities.

Additionally, representatives of the China National Nuclear Power Co., Ltd, the China Isotope & Radiation Corporation and other CNNC's subsidiaries briefed attendees about their latest technological research progress and results concerning the Linglong One (the world's first commercial small modular reactor) and high-temperature gas cooled reactor through physical exhibits and on-site demonstrations.

During the past four decades, China has been firmly committed to building an opening and inclusive international cooperation environment and working together with its global business partners over the innovative development of nuclear technology and the utilization of relevant research results in bringing benefits to mankind.

In this October, Hainan Nuclear Power signed the world's first capacity-building execution deal with the IAEA over the SMRs construction on the sidelines of an international conference on SMRs and their applications in Vienna of Austria.

The workshop event was the first activity held by the two sides after the deal. During the gathering, attendees paid a visit to the bases of Hainan Nuclear Power and learned more about the construction of Linglong One nuclear reactors.

The workshop event served as a vital platform for the IAEA to deepen international collaboration, bringing together participants from various fields of nuclear energy development across member states.

In the years to come, the CNNC will seize the strategic opportunity of the Linglong One nuclear technology to strengthen its position as a global leader in nuclear science and technology, enhance China's influence in setting international nuclear technology standards and accelerate the global expansion of China's nuclear energy technology.
