Belgium regulators consider possible two units operation beyond 2025

AtomInfo.Ru, PUBLISHED 19.01.2022

The Federal Agency for Nuclear Control (FANC) of Belgium issued a verdict that the Doel-4 and Tihange-3 units, due to their technical condition, can continue to operate beyond 2025, subject to a number of modernization measures.

The final decision on the fate of the units must be made by the Belgian government.

Earlier, in December 2021, the ruling coalition reached an agreement to close all nuclear units in the country until 2025. In total, there are seven operating units in Belgium at two plants Doel and Tihange.

The "Doel-4" and "Tihange-3" units were put into commercial operation in July and September 1985, respectively. According to the agreement, they should be permanently closed in 2025.

This critical analysis of the history, state, and prospects of development of modern nuclear technologies shows that nuclear energy market has practically monopolized the design and construction of only one type of reactors (95% of NPPs under construction use pressurized water reactors), which necessitates training of focused specialists involved in the construction and operation of those nuclear power plants.
