Finland will still need to import electricity after the start-up of the Olkiluoto-3

AtomInfo.Ru, PUBLISHED 03.02.2015

Finland will continue to need to import electricity even after the start-up of third Olkiluoto unit.

This conclusion was made in the report issued by the Finnish ministry of employment and the economy in late January.

The report analyses the electricity demands of Finland in the period up to 2018, 2025, and 2030. It has been considered that one more unit will be commissioned in addition to Olkiluoto-3 before 2025.

The report states that prior to Olkiluoto-3 commissioning, Finland will have to import about 2.8 GW, and at the peak - up to 4 GW, especially in the case of cold winters.

The authors of the report believe that the import sources are available. However, they concern by the intention of the Swedish authorities to gradually phase out nuclear power, which will adversely affect the overall energy balance in the region in the long term.
