In the Netherlands completed the first stage of qualifying fuel for Chinese HTGR

AtomInfo.Ru, PUBLISHED 10.01.2015

The NRG company completed in December 2014 the multi-year project under the program of qualifying fuel for Chinese high-temperature reactor HTR-PM, according to the company.

The company operates a research reactor HFR in Petten, the Netherlands. The project for the fuel qualifications was carried out on behalf of the developer, the Chinese INET institute.

In the reactor HTR-PM, the construction of the first unit with which (two reactors per turbine) began on the Chinese site Shidao Bay, the typical for HTGR projects ball fuel is used - the graphite spheres with a diameter of 6 cm with splashes of uranium microfuel.

The first stage - the irradiation in HFR - was completed in December 2014. The burn-up which was achieved is not given, but in the project documentation of the HTR-PM one may find that the burn-up in this reactor can reach 100 GW×day/mt.

The second stage of the qualification program - the heating in furnaces - must pass in Karlsruhe. The tests will be conducted on five irradiated in HFR spherical fuel elements.
