Kerry Says US Hopes to Reach Iranian Nuclear Deal in Next Weeks: Agency RIA Novosti, PUBLISHED 28.09.2014 Washington hopes to reach a deal on Iranian nuclear program in the upcoming weeks, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported Saturday, citing US Secretary of State John Kerry. "It remains our fervent hope that Iran and the P5+1 can in the next weeks come to an agreement that would benefit the world," Kerry said as quoted by the agency. The statement came as the US Secretary of State started a second consecutive day of talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on the nuclear problem. The meeting between Kerry, Zarif and the EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton is reportedly held at a New York hotel. The West and the United Nations have imposed sanctions against Iran over its alleged military nuclear program. Tehran argues that its nuclear development pursues purely peaceful goals, particularly, meeting the growing energy needs. Iran and the so-called P5+1 international mediation group, which includes Russia, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, China and the United States, reached a temporary deal back in November 2013. The deadline for a long-term agreement is November 2014.
