IAEA Director General to Visit Iran on August 17

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Yukiya Amano, will visit Iran on August 17 for meetings with Iranian leaders and senior officials, IAEA said Friday.

“The visit is part of the efforts to advance dialogue and cooperation between the Agency and Iran,” the UN nuclear watchdog said in a statement published on its website.

Earlier today Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said that Tehran and the so-called P5+1 group are unlikely to reach a permanent deal on Tehran’s nuclear program before a four-month extension period expires in November.

In July, Iran and a group of six international mediators — Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, China and Germany — agreed to extend the deadline to reach a deal on Tehran’s nuclear program.

Under the Geneva action plan adopted last November, the six world powers and Iran were supposed to reach a deal guaranteeing the exclusively peaceful nature of Tehran’s nuclear program by July 20 in exchange for the step-by-step lifting of international sanctions against the Islamic republic.
