North Korea Fires 100 Missiles Into Sea of Japan

North Korea on Monday fired a barrage of some hundred artillery shells off its eastern coast, according to the Yonhap news agency who cited a military source in Seoul.

According to South Korea’s military command, the launches took place at about 11:52 am local time (2:53 GMT). Projectiles were shot from an area close to the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) that separates North and South.

This came a day after Seoul claimed that Pyongyang again launched two short-range rockets in the early hours of Sunday that reportedly flew about 500 kilometers before plunging into the Sea of Japan. On Wednesday, two rockets were fired in the same direction from North Korea’s western province of Hwanghae.

These launches are the latest in a series of suspected missile tests that happened over the past week. The North has vowed to carry out further strategic guided-missile tests despite international calls to curb its weapons program.

In late March or early April, North Korea reportedly conducted engine tests for an intercontinental ballistic missile that could potentially deliver a nuclear warhead to the US, according to 38 North program, affiliated with the US-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins University.
