Murmansk Region to Launch New Cruise Itineraries and Arctic Museum

RIA Novosti, PUBLISHED 22.11.2013

New cruise itineraries in the Arctic, an Arctic museum and alpine skiing are to shape the region’s travel industry as a new component of the Murmansk regional economy, Governor Marina Kovtun said at the opening of Murmansk Business Week.

The second Murmansk International Business Week attracted representatives from 11 countries who are interested in cooperating with the Murmansk Region on various issues. The governor said that the travel industry should become one of the most important components of the region’s economy.

Even now, the ice-breaker fleet based in the Murmansk Region offers unique cruises to the North Pole aboard nuclear ice-breakers.

"An Arctic Harbor project will contribute to the development of cruise travel. The docks for long-distance ships are being upgraded and should be completed in 2014. Later, renovation of the Murmansk marine passenger terminal is planned,” Kovtun said.

Also, there is an agreement to develop and promote a new cruise route connecting Murmansk, the Russian Arctic national park (the Novaya Zemlya archipelago and Franz Josef Land) and Arkhangelsk. Another promotion campaign concerns alpine skiing. Kovtun said that the regional government approved a business plan proposed by Kanatnaya Doroga to develop an alpine skiing infrastructure in the Khibiny Mountains. The project would require constructing modern ski lifts on Mount Aikuaivenchorr among other projects.

We believe that signing and ratifying the CTBT should become an imperative for international relations as it will help strengthen the nuclear nonproliferation regime. It is within our reach to make our world safer.
