Rusatom Overseas, PUBLISHED November 15, 2012

Anatoly Safonov, Deputy Director General of Rusatom Overseas, spoke today at an international conference on trends in the field of nuclear energy entitled "East Europe Nuclear Energy Summit 2012", which takes place this week in Prague, Czech Republic

According to Safonov international cooperation without irrational prejudices is the basic pillar of maintaining nuclear security and stability in the energy sector. Global developments clearly show that strengthening of mutual cooperation and joint defining of international projects in the field of nuclear energy is a major trend to follow.

"Nuclear energy is of strategic value for the national development of countries and it represents a unique energy source that has no adequate alternatives in the near future. It is also a response to the current challenges by being environmentally friendly, efficient, safe and secure source of energy," said Anatoly Safonov in his speech.

Safonov also believes that nowadays the fundamental tasks of the international community related to the protection of nuclear facilities comprise of prevention of terrorist acts, setting and maintaining of robust and effective security measures to protect all nuclear sites and materials. That is why, under the leadership of Russia and the U.S.A., the Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism was established. This international forum unites 85 like-minded countries in order to foster international cooperation in key areas of prevention of nuclear terrorism, identification of threats and finding answers to those risks.

"The current action plan to ensure the physical nuclear security for the period 2010 - 2013 is based on the principle of encouraging wider usage of IT and Hi-Tech systems, strengthening of the role of the global nuclear security coordinator, the International Atomic Energy Agency, and providing support to member states upon their request," said Anatoly Safonov. Furthermore, changes are currently also being made to the existing framework of international law. For example, there was a consensus on the creation of nuclear-weapons-free-zones, which will include the regions of Middle East, Southeast Asia and Central Asia.

Cooperation in nuclear energy is also vital at regional level. For instance, the collaboration between countries of Central and Eastern Europe and Russia in the field of nuclear energy has been an important element of achieving social development, energy independence and economic stability by offering reliability, safety, economic efficiency, localisation programmes of industrial production and job creation prospects. "The development of nuclear energy is accompanied by significant economic advancements. Each one job created directly as a result of nuclear programme gives rise to 7-10 additional jobs throughout the entire economy of a country," commented Safonov.

Rusatom Overseas, a subsidiary of the State Atomic Energy Corporation "ROSATOM" (ROSATOM), was founded in 2011 with the aim of promoting Russian nuclear technology on the global market. Rusatom Overseas acts as an integrator of ROSATOM's complex solutions in nuclear energy, manages the promotion of the integrated offer and the development of Russian nuclear business abroad, as well as working to create a worldwide network of ROSATOM's marketing offices. Rusatom Overseas also acts as a developer of ROSATOM's foreign projects, which are implemented with the build-own-operate (BOO) structure.
