Radiation level normal in Russia Far East despite Japan disaster - ministry

RIA Novosti, PUBLISHED March 27, 2011

The radiation background in the Russian Far East on Sunday was within normal limits, said the regional Emergencies Ministry center that monitors radiation levels following a number of recent explosions at Japan's Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant.

The Fukushima plant was hit by a number of explosions following a 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami that killed thousands on March 11.

Efforts are still underway to try to cool down the overheating nuclear cores in the reactors in a bid to prevent nuclear fallout.

Trace amounts of radioactive iodine were discovered in tap water in Tokyo in the wake of the disaster at the crippled nuclear plant.

The Japanese government has halted sale of food products from the area of Fukushima, the International Atomic Energy Agency said as the presence of radioactive iodine contamination in food products from near the Fukushima plant was confirmed.
