Electricity supply works resume at crippled Fukushima 1 NPP RIA Novosti, PUBLISHED March 25, 2011 Works to restore main cooling and power functions at Japan's quake-hit Fukushima 1 nuclear power plant resumed on Thursday after they were hindered the previous day by a black smoke rising from the plant's 3rd reactor, Kyodo news agency reported. The cause of the rising black smoke, which stopped by itself at 4:50 a.m. local time Thursday, is still unknown, but no fire was seen and no climb in radiation levels was registered. Tokyo Electric Power Co. already managed to restore electricity in the control room of the 1st reactor. All six reactors were reconnected to the external power as of Tuesday night. The electricity supply will run an automated cooling system in the damaged reactors and pools containing spent nuclear fuel. A powerful earthquake and ensuing tsunami that hit Japan on March 11 triggered a number of explosions at Fukushima, spreading fears of massive radioactive contamination. A total of over 9,000 people have been confirmed dead in Japan's earthquake, but officials say the final death toll is likely to top 20,000.
