Seminar Nuclear Power of Turkey held in Ankara Press Service of Project Company Akkuyu NPP, PUBLISHED March 02, 2011 On the 18-th of February in Ankara hotel Rixos a seminar “Nuclear Power in Turkey” was held. The event was organized by the Project Company Akkuyu NPP and the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey. The seminar was attended by Minister of Energy Natural Resources of Turkey Taner Y?ld?z, representatives of the National Intelligence Agency and General Staff of Turkey, as well as top-level officials from ministries of education, health, interior, industry, agriculture etc. At the seminar T. Yildiz said that having implemented the project, Turkey would strengthen its position in the world arena as a country which is modern in all respects. The minister reminded that near all liquid fuel and natural gas used by the country is imported by Turkey and the country depends by 70% on the resulted energy. He said that according to the state plan, an annual economic growth was 7-8%, of 4,000-5,000 MW in energy equivalent to be secured by Akkuyu NPP. The minister pointed out that the cooperation between Turkey and Russia in implementation of this project enters an absolutely new level. “Russia has never made such large investments within single project before. This project is an issue of prestige of our country. This is an example of strategic cooperation of the two countries and one of major projects for Turkey,” he emphasized. In his presentation, Director General of the Project Company Akkuyu NPP Alexander Superfin said that the company has been established two months ago and during its foundation “support was felt from both local and Russian authorities.” He said a number of meetings had been held with state authorities. In Mersin City, studies were carried out, and in Moscow research has started on the NPP environmental impacts. A visit of the Russian engineers to the Akkuyu site is planned for the first week of March, according to him. A. Superfin announced that in March an educational seminar would be held in the Nuclear Power Society of Turkey where specialists would provide information on features of the design, construction process and safety systems. He noted that most recent safety system would be installed at the NPP. The issue of staff training was also addressed. Since the work at a NPP requires relevant skills and competences, the Project Company made a proposal to send several groups of students to receive required education in the best higher education establishments to Russia. “Already now we are ready to start selecting the students with the help of the Ministry of Education of Turkey for them to start training already in September. The Russian side is to bear all costs of organizing the education,” Superfin said. Representatives of Atomstroyexport JSC also participated in the seminar and presented on the current state of nuclear power in the world. The speaker said Akkuyu NPP would be fitted with a two-level safety system (active and passive). In addition, seismic activity in that region will be taken account of during construction of the reactors. At a press conference held after the seminar, Superfin said “the project is at the initial stage of its implementation and we consider proposals coming from the Turkish companies. In the first place, this relates to supplies of materials, construction and installation works, as well as engineering and research.” He expressed confidence in positive decisions on proposals made by Turkish firms soon.
