Atomstroyexport and JNPC have signed a contract for the preliminary design of the second stage of Tianwan NPP

On the 27-th of September, 2010 in the course of the visit of President of the Russian Federation, Mr. Dmitriy Medvedev, to the People’s Republic of China a contract for the development of the preliminary design of the second stage of Tianwan NPP (Lianyungang city, PRC) has been signed. JSC “Atomstroyexport”, an company of State Corporation “Rosatom”, and Jiangsu Nuclear Power Corporation (JNPC) are the parties under the contract. The contract was signed by President of JSC “Atomstroyexport”, Mr. Dan Belenkiy, and JNPC General Manager, Mr. Jiang Guoyuan.

In accordance with the contract JSC “Atomstroyexport” will gain a unique experience in the nuclear power plant construction in cooperation with the Chinese supplier of low speed turbines. The parties have noted that after the implementation of this project the practice of the Russian-Chinese cooperation has good prospects for replication in the third countries.

Units 3, 4 will be erected under the project similar to the first stage of Tianwan NPP: two power units of the Russian design with reactor facilities WWER-1000 with the electric power of 1060 МWt each. The designing and delivery of the equipment for

the non-nuclear part of the nuclear power plant will be performed by JNPC.

Previously, in 2008 State Corporation “Rosatom” and “China National Nuclear Corporation” (CNNC) signed the Memorandum of cooperation in construction of the second stage (the 3-rd and the 4-th power units) of the Tianwan NPP and demonstration fast reactors. On the 23-rd of March, 2010 the frame contract for construction of the second stage of Tianwan NPP was signed in Moscow between JSC “Atomstroyexport” and JNPC. Conclusion of the contract for the development of the preliminary design of Units 3, 4 of the Chinese nuclear power plant has become a new phase in the implementation of the achieved agreements.

The first construction stage of Tianwan NPP consisting of two units was performed by JSC “Atomstroyexport” pursuant to the Intergovernmental agreement between the RF and the PRC on cooperation in construction of the nuclear power plant in the PRC. Having put the first Unit of Tianwan NPP in the warranty commission for the Chinese customer in June, 2, 2007,

the second unit – in September, 12, 2007, “Atomstroyexport”, being the first one of the companies working in the NPP construction world market, has constructed power units of new generation. In 2009 their two-year warranty operation was completed. Tianwan NPP, built according to the improved Russian project, is the most state-of-the-art one from the nuclear power plants operating in the PRC.

At the Symposium of the participants in the Tianwan NPP construction held in September, 2010 in Lianyungang the Chinese party has declared the following: in the course of the operation of the first stage of the TNPP a high level of the unit operation has been achieved, the All-Chinese record of the most prestigious operational achievement in China as regards non-availability of the unit and reactor shutdowns in the period of the first fuel cycle has been set up.
