First reactor launched for floating nuclear power plant

The first reactor of the floating nuclear power plant “Academician Lomonosov” has been launched at the St. Petersburg-based Baltic Shipyard.

Sergei Kiriyenko, CEO of state-owned Rosatom Nuclear Energy State Corporation, the regulatory body of the Russian nuclear industry, Sergei Obozov, General Director of the national nuclear operator Rosenergoatom, Andrei Fomichyov, General Director of United Industrial Corporation’s Baltic Shipyard and Northern Shipyard, and St. Petersburg Governor Valentina Matviyenko attended the ceremony.

Construction of the nuclear reactor began in March 2009. The Baltic Shipyard started assembling it in May. The reactor will be tested as part of a floating power plant and will be commissioned by late 2012.
