Mr. KHAIRUL: Indonesia works closely with the IAEA

The 4th Russian International Conference on Nuclear Material Protection, Control and Accounting (MPCA-2009) is started in Obninsk, Russia, at 19th of October, 2009.

One of conference participants - Mr. KHAIRUL (Indonesia) is talking to the web-newspaper AtomInfo.Ru.

I am working in the National Nuclear Energy Agency, Indonesia, in particular for the physical protection of nuclear material and radioactive sources. My poster presentation for the MPCA-2009 conference in Obninsk, Russia, is explaining the Indonesian experience of implementing the nuclear security and physical protection.

Indonesia is fully committed to implement the protection of nuclear material and radioactive sources against theft and sabotage. Indonesia works closely with the IAEA, and we have signed the NPT and safeguard agreement and additional protocol in order to make sure that all nuclear items are in the secure and safe position.

As you know, Indonesia plans to build the nuclear power plant in the future, in 2017. We need the nuclear power because we have to support the electrical production. In our country we have lack of electricity, in particular for Jawa island. We hope that nuclear power will enhance our industry and ultimately will support economics growth.

The nuclear program in Indonesia is proposed for using the energy for peaceful uses. So far we make some cooperation with other countries such as the United States. We are working jointly with those governments to support our physical protection efforts. Indonesia is facing the real threats from the terrorist groups, and we do not want that the terrorist attacks would repeat again, in particular in the nuclear facility.

We have a good cooperation with the IAEA for the IPPAS program - International Physical Protection Advisory Services - in determining of our security level on the Indonesian research TRIGA LEU reactors located in different provinces.

Based on the recommendation we make several actions complied with the IAEA's international regulations and the national regulations as well.
