Construction of the 2nd unit of Volgodonsk NPP will be accelerated

According to website of Volgodonsk NPP, the federal Atomic Energy Agency (Rosatom) and Rosenergoatom have taken measures for accelerating construction of the 2nd unit of Volgodonsk NPP, which is significantly behind schedule.

In particular, it have been noted that only 79 of 126 items of work planned for June were fulfilled. Capital expenditures were 66% of capital budget planned.

To accelerate construction of the unit, the management structure of construction was changed. Volgodonsk NPP director Alexander Palamarchuk headed a new established management of capital construction.

FGUP Nizhegorodsky institute "Atomenergoproject" director Valery Limarenko has become responsible for planned start-up of the unit in 2009.

A system of daily shift planning of work and detailed diagrams are introduced at construction site for all unit structures under construction.

The following main tasks should be fulfilled in July: preparing to assembly of reactor vessel, installation of lifts in reactor departments and two cranes in storage for solid radioactive waste.

At present one unit with VVER-1000 reactor operates at Volgodonsk NPP. It provides 15% of annual electricity needs in the south of Russia.

Rosatom head Sergey Kirienko declared earlier that work on construction of the 2nd unit should be completed till 2009, if properly organized.
