RF Federation Council ratified Agreement for foundation of ITER international organization for thermonuclear power

Chairman of the Foreign affaires Committee Michael Margelov told that the aim of ITER organization is to provide the cooperation between participants of this Agreement for construction international thermonuclear experimental reactor (ITER) to demonstrate scientific and technological possibility of peaceful thermonuclear power use.

According to Margelov, the contribution of Russia in this project is 10% that will be realized through equipment deliveries.

"Russia together with other participants of the project will have full access to ITER project sci-tech information", - Margelov noted.

The senators also ratified the agreement for privileges and immunities of international organization ITER.

"This document will ensure necessary international-legal basis for realization of the project", - Margelov announced.

International thermonuclear reactor will be constructed in Cadarache, France. Its construction should continue 10 years, the reactor is suggested to operate during 20 years.

Total cost of the project is estimated to USA$ 10 billion, Eurounion will pay 40%, the rest project's participants - 60% in equal parts.

Unlike existing reactors based on nuclear fission, ITER reactor is based on thermonuclear synthesis. Actually, scientists state a problem of repeat in laboratory then in industrial scale the processes taking place on the Sun: fusion of nuclei of hydrogen isotopes-deuterium and tritium which produce inert gas helium and large energy release. One gram of deuterium and tritium fuel produces theoretically amount of energy equivalent to burnt 8 tons of oil.

Chairmen the RF Public Chamber, director of Russian Nuclear Center "Kurchatov institute" academician Eugene Velikhov declared earlier: "ITER is safe for environment and humanity. This reactor has no elements allowing to make a nuclear bomb".
