Kalinin NPP first realized a project of underground deposit for industrial waste

According to press-center of Rosenergoatom, a polygon for deep underground burying of industrial waste was put into operation at Kalinin NPP. This project was realized first.

"Now industrial waste (water used for restoration of ion-exchange capability of resin of cleaning filters) wouldn't be return to Kalinin NPP's cooling pound", - deputy head of chemical shop of Kalinin NPP, Genady Sizov said.

The main aim of deep underground burying is to decrease significantly or fully exclude pollution of the surface or shallow deposited underground water. These industrial waste pump down the bore-holes deeply in the parts of earth, which isn't useful for other purposes. Before pumping down the bore holes, industrial waste were settled and filtrated mechanically and their parameters were adjusted to standards.

New polygon consists of 17 bore-holes (5 bore holes under pressure with the depth of 1300 m and 12 bore- holes for observation). They are designed for 30 years operation. Opening of the polygon facilitates not only to solve technological problems. According to Sizov, this polygon is a facility protecting nature and allowing to enhance ecological safety of Kalinin NPP, and Kalinin region, as a whole.
