Rostechnadzor approved the requirements to facilities for immobilization of transuranium radioactive waste

According to the information center of Rostechnadzor, the requirements to facilities for immobilization of transuranium (TRU) radioactive waste were approved first.

Regulatory document of the Federal Service for ecological, technological and nuclear supervision established principles, criteria and requirements of ensuring safety of facilities for immobilization of radiation waste containing TRU elements as sources of possible radiation effect on personnel, population and environment.

The requirements define the criteria of safety from the moment of designing facility for immobilization of TRU radioactive waste, assurance of quality of facility operation and the work under fulfillment. The characteristics of material of ceramic or mineral-like matrices including TRU elements were defined. These matrices should be radiation thermo resistant, proof against to leaching of glass mass. These matrices have such properties that it is difficult to extract TRU elements from them. The quality of glass mass packaging should provide the safe condition of storage.

These requirements were developed in accordance with the general principles, criteria and requirements ensuring safety at facilities of nuclear fuel cycle in correspondence with the federal regulations and rules in the area of peaceful use of nuclear power, as well as IAEA recommendations.

This document was signed by Rostechnadzor head Constantine Pulikovsky.
