The Kursk NPP Unit No 2 connected to the grid

On June 27 turbo-generator No4 of unit 2 put into operation, and unit 2 is greatly increased to full power.

Unit 2 was shut down by operation of turbo generator's automatic safety shutdown system on June 25. This shut down didn't effect on NPP safety and environment. According to the International Nuclear Event Scale (INESP), this event is classified on the Scale as level 0 (no safety significance). Mulfunctions leaded to shut down of unit were removed.

Now units No 1, 2, 3 and 4 are in operation. Unit No 1 was connected to the grid on June 28 after final repair.

There are no violations of requirements of safe operation of the Kursk NPP.

Radiation background at the Kursk NPP and neighboring territories are at the level corresponding normal operation of NPP and doesn't exceed natural radiation background values.

According to information center of the Kursk NPP, the proximate cause of shut down of the Kursk NPP unit 2 was a leakage of cooling gas of turbo-generator 4 (TG-4). The leakage was due to loss of seal of flange joint of pipe-line for supplying cooling gas to generator. In accordance with operating instructions the operation staff switched off TG-4. The subsequent decrease of power of unit 2 leaded to automatic shut down of reactor.
