Former Siemens manager Michael Kutschenreuter gas has admitted that his concern gave bribes in Slovakia in the second half of the 1990s.

According to the Hospodarske Noviny daily, Kutschenreuter, who has been temporarily released from custody, made the claim at the beginning of this week to investigators in Munich.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Kutschenreuter said he had witnessed "the paying of bribes for energy projects in Russia and Slovakia".

The Slovak branch of Siemens would not comment on the matter, but the concern's headquarters in Munich denied the allegation.

The anti-corruption unit of the Slovak police said that no investigation had yet been launched in this matter.

Siemens' energy division has been active in Slovakia since 1997. During the period indicated by Kutschenreuter, the company installed a management system at Slovakia's Mochovce nuclear power plant, and renewed the public lighting system in Bratislava.
