South Korea to include the construction of four SMR in plans

413 nuclear units are operating in the world, 58 units are under construction

South Africa - a new energy strategy
It is worth noting that the first consideration (about the locations of the SMR) may be very important for the conditions of South Africa.
The plan recognizes the existence of significant capacity constraints on power transmission in several regions of the country. Thus, in the period from 2013 to 2022, only about 4,000 km of transmission lines were built, while more than 14,000 km of transmission lines must be built by 2032.
Small modular reactors, however, will not be able to cover the needs of South Africa for new capacities if this country decides to finally start nuclear construction.
The new version of the IRP plan proposes five scenarios for the development of South African energy until 2050.

South Korea and the Saudi Contest
South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol plans to hold high-level talks with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in November this year.
According to BusinessKorea, special attention will be paid to nuclear energy during the negotiations.
South Korea intends to export at least 10 nuclear power units by 2030, and Saudi Arabia is among the potential consumers of South Korean reactor technologies.
The publication recalls that in May 2022, Saudi Arabia sent an invitation to China, Russia, France and South Korea to participate in a tender for the construction of two nuclear power units with a capacity of up to 1.4 GWe each.
According to experts, South Korea and Russia have an advantage in the competition, since the price of the...

Some commentators like to use arithmetic to compare various international organizations. If we add up the annual GDP of China (the world's second largest economy), Japan (the third largest economy) and South Korea (whose GDP is nothing to sneeze at) and compare the sum to the GDPs of the G8, which also includes Japan...nothing will happen. This is a senseless exercise because regional and international organizations are not created to flex muscles - economic or otherwise.
The GA is merely a top-level forum for discussing and regulating the ongoing formation of a common economic space in this part of the world. ASEAN performs a similar function in Southeast Asia. The purpose of these organizations is completely clear. The G8, meanwhile, appears no longer to serve a purpose.
But the GA is a special case. There are few organizations in the world where the members have such long-standing animosity toward one another. For example, while Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan, his Chinese counterpart Wen Jiabao and South Korean President Lee Myung-bak have agreed on new plans for cooperation.

Professor Il Soon Hwang: heavy metal coolant has great advantages
In order to accept this kind of situation in Korea, our university is pursuing the technical solutions to transmute the spent nuclear fuel. We expect that we can eliminate the long-living radioactive isotopes. Eventually we hope to turn all the spent nuclear fuel into low or medium level nuclear waste.
That means we can continue our nuclear power program with the public acceptance. One can say that the transmutation technology could help us to win this public acceptance. This technology is not only environmental friendly but also safe and proliferation resistant.
We see that the heavy metal coolant technology has the great advantages over any other existing technological option for the transmutation applications because of its chemical inertness, high boiling point and good capability for natural circulation.
Therefore, we are going to take the advantage of this Russian innovation in nuclear coolant to develop the safe and proliferation-resistant transmutation technology.
